Our approach to design is defined by restrained geometries and considered formal qualities—creating spaces that are both visually composed and sensorially rich. We craft interiors that balance atmospherics, light, and materiality with biophilic connections to the natural world, ensuring every project is both experientially engaging and commercially viable. Our aim is to create environments where design enhances daily life, cultivating calm, cohesion, and timeless presence.

Studio Welgus influences the space between quiet luxury and considered intention. Led by principal Michael Welgus, the Melbourne-based studio works across private and multi-residential projects, as well as bespoke hospitality and retail spaces, shaping environments that are as refined and thoughtful as they are lived-in. Every project is guided by tonal precision, restrained geometry, and human-centric design, with each material, line, surface, and detail carefully curated to form spaces that feel cohesive, purposeful, and enduring.

For the studio, architecture is an experience first and foremost—a sensory journey that nurtures wellbeing and respects context. Projects are born from a careful orchestration of light, aspect, volume, and amenity, allowing narrative to emerge organically from the place itself. Influenced by modernist, mid-century, and brutalist principles, Studio Welgus deliberately resists trends, instead crafting interiors defined by material depth, subtle detailing, and atmospherics. At its core, the studio’s work is collaborative and empathetic, creating spaces that elevate everyday life with calm, clarity, and timeless presence.

MICHAEL WELGUS
Principal
B. Interior Design (Hons) | Adv. Dip. Building Design (Arch)

As principal of Studio Welgus, Michael founded the studio on the conviction that the environments we inhabit profoundly shape our wellbeing and deepen our connection to place. His design principles are defined by restraint, clarity, and a quietly luxurious sensibility. With a career spanning diverse typologies—particularly private and multi-residential developments—and a rare dual expertise in Building Design and Interior Architecture, Michael’s approach is both rigorous and intuitive, balancing spatial intelligence with a deep commitment to atmosphere, materiality, and lived experience. As former Principal of Interior Design at award-winning, Melbourne based studio, Finnis Architects, his expertise has been carefully honed into a practice defined by precision, narrative depth, and enduring value—a philosophy he now brings to every Studio Welgus project.

For Michael, architecture is never purely aesthetic; it is a sensory pursuit, an opportunity to create spaces that nurture our lived experience and that respect and pay homage to the surrounding environment. Each project begins with a careful orchestration of light, aspect, volume, and amenity, allowing a narrative to emerge organically from context. Guided by modernist, mid-century, and brutalist principles, Studio Welgus remains intentionally removed from short-lived trends, crafting interiors of tonal materiality, restrained geometry, and considered detailing. At its core, Michael’s work is collaborative and human-centric — designed to elevate the rituals of everyday life with calm, cohesion, and timeless resolve.
